ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Barbara Franceski is one of DC's newest residential designers to keep an eye on, creating very personal homes that are at once elegant and inviting. Embracing both classical and contemporary elements, smart design is Barbara's hallmark – beautiful, well-thought out spaces that seem perfectly at ease with their environment.
Growing up just minutes from the nation's capital, Barbara was strongly encouraged as a child to appreciate the arts. From classes on calligraphy and marbling paper at the Smithsonian to making pinhole cameras at Glen Echo, each experience further fueled her passion for creating. Fortunate enough to study in France and Italy during college, European sensibilities have shaped Barbara's work ever since. Not only does she thoughtfully employ color to enhance the visual experience, she loves to blend scale, styles, periods, and pieces. She also gravitates to order, so space around an object is just as important to her as the object itself. It's this ability to mix, edit and refine that sets Barbara apart, and brings originality to her interiors.
Initially apprenticing with prominent Washington designer Emily Malino, she later chose to work in the commercial side of the industry as a space planner/specifier for a local Knoll dealer managing several corporate and government projects. Barbara left the design world for a while to pursue other interests, including special events and public relations. Four years ago, she journeyed full circle back to interior design, finding her niche specializing in high-end residences.
She is NCIDQ-certified, licensed in DC, and a professional member of the American Society of Interior Designers. Recently nominated by the Washington Design Center for their 2010 "Ones to Watch" award, this year marks Barbara's first appearance in the DC Design House.
